Springwood Winmalee Guides - Guides Overview


Guiding provides girls with fantastic opportunities to develop life skills, confidence to think and act for themselves, friendship, respect for their environment and a sense of community.

Who are Guides?
Membership of Guides NSW is open to girls from 5 to 18 years of age, and women 18 years and over. As a Guide Member, you belong to and the which has over 10 million members in 140 countries. 

What do Guides do?
Guides try a wide range of activities, appropriate to their age and abilities. The girls decide, plan, participate in and evaluate their, which is facilitated by an accredited trained adult volunteer Leader.
The girls belong to a local Unit, which is divided into two or more small groups called Patrols.  Through their Patrol activities, the Guides gain skills in communication, teamwork, decision making and leadership, which help prepare them for life.

How often do Guides meet?
Guides usually meet in a local hall, once a week during term time for 1-2 hours, depending on the girl's age.
Outdoor activities are an important part of the Guide Program. Guides also learn many skills by attending camps and trying outdoor adventurous activities in a safe and responsible environment. 

Why just girls?
Research has shown that girls and young women can achieve more when they are in an all girls environment.

Is there a cost?
Youth and Adult members pay an annual State membership fee to Guides NSW.  Members also pay a small fee to their local unit, which may vary across the State, as well as occasional fees for camps and special activities.
Guiding offers very good value for money.

Is there a uniform?
The girls in each Unit decide on the Guide gear that best suits their Unit, choosing from a wide range of uniform options. The uniform helps to develop a sense of belonging and team spirit.
